Branding is all about confidence. It’s about knowing who you are as a business, and then facing the market and saying ‘We’ve got what you need’. But behind all of that is the business owner, who may not feel anywhere near as confident or professional as their branding would make them seem.
That doesn’t mean your branding is wrong. Your business should have an identity you can be proud of. But it can lead to feelings of imposter syndrome, which can affect how well you approach networking, communicating, and even marketing.
Which is why you should focus on building up this confidence. You should be able to feel capable and professional in yourself and your abilities too.
And to do that, you might just need to change a few things about the way you work.

Remove the Confusion Around Your Finances
You’re never going to feel like a professional while you’re still confused and overwhelmed by a tax return. You need to be able to take financial concerns on your shoulders and focus on how you can work with them, find the right solution, and not get run down by the stress of not being on top of them.
So for one, get yourself a proper start up business account. An account like this makes it a lot easier to keep track of everything to do with your business’ finances, from investments to payments to recording your receipts. If it can all be done simply in one account, accessible via just the one app, there goes the confusion!
For another, get yourself an accountant. Confidence isn’t about covering up any deficits in your skills. It’s about not what you’re good at AND what you’re not, and then taking the latter and making the best of them. So if you can’t quite handle your business’ tax needs, find someone who can!
‘Bad’ at Networking? Practice!
It really is this simple. Write out what you want to say when introducing yourself to another business owner or a prospect, and then take that script and learn it off by heart. Once you have, watch yourself perform it in the bathroom mirror.
And yes, you may feel silly as you do all of this. But the end result will help you appear more confident in the moment.
And when you’re appearing that way, it’s a lot easier to end up feeling that way too. After all, you’ll soon learn that you were capable of appearing confident, charismatic, and at ease in a business arena all along.
Of course, you’ll want to be sure that any pitch you put together can be easily tailored to suit who you’re talking to – and that takes a bit of skill. But once again, the more you practice this kind of thing, the easier it’ll get.
Working confidently helps you fit into your business’ brand. In those moments when you feel like a total imposter, remember the tips above and put them to good use.
