Logos are Truly the Face of a Brand

With that being said, designing a unique logo design is not a simple task. It takes a lot more than some random shapes and brush strokes and the name of the company to become an impactful logo.

Logo design requires skillful craftsmanship and multiple disciplines not just including art, and design but also mathematics, and psychology plays a vital and crucial role in the formation of a good logo design that forms a forever lasting memorable brand mark.

The Logo Grid System has become one of the most scientific logo design processes there is when creating a logos, and when executed correctly during the logo design stages the Grid System can transform a logo design into something very special.

What is a Logo Design Grid?

Let’s explain what a logo grid is, it’s a grid system that is used to construct shapes that form designs for a logo design. Its main purpose is to produce geometric harmony, and there are a range of grids that can be used to create a logo design.

The most common go-to grid that designers use is a square grid system. Before the age of computers, graphic designers would use square grid paper to help form and structure logos. Those days they all used the same mathematical design approach.

Using a grid system in logo design is not mandatory it does have its benefits and many advantages when creating a logo design.

Benefits of using a Logo Design Grid

Every different logo designer in the industry has their own reasons for designing logos using a logo grid system. There are some primary benefits to the reasons why a designer chooses to use this design technique.

    1. Helps Keep You Focused and Your Design Organised

When designing logos, a designer wants to be organised, and in a focused mindset. Using a logo grid system is a critical benefit to help with this. While a designer is designing a single element at a time, they can then evaluate the design process as it gradually evolves.

    2. Balance & Visual Consistency is Maintained

Logo Grid Systems adopts a mathematical approach, making a design a lot simpler to maintain its accuracy and overall consistency between the different design elements. Some grid systems can feel restrictive when using them, but they can drastically help maintain visual consistency throughout the design process.

    3. Keep Design Layouts from Looking Cluttered

Logo Grid Systems help designers to place design elements in the correct places, helping to avoid cluttered looking designs. Using margins to help avoid cluttered layouts is a vital stage in a logo design, especially if the design has more than a few elements. By keeping margins open more the better the logo design is going to look. Think Clean!

    4. Helps Maintain Scalable and Clean Designs

Using a logo grid system helps create and maintain a scalable design. This allows the logo to be used across a variety of mediums such as a printed design such as flyers and business cards, on the internet on a company website, or displayed on the side of a bus or on top of a building.

Logo Design needs to make sense visually regardless of the size its been displayed eg – scaled down and printed on a pen or scaled up and printed on a hot air balloon, the rule of thirds ensures the logo makes sense.

20 Famous Brand Logos Constructed in Grid Systems

Let’s now take a look at 20 Famous Brand Logos Constructed by Grid Systems. While browsing i stumbled on some great famous logos constructed in grid systems. They were designed by Florian Popescu who took on the challenge to study some famous brand logos and construct them in a grid system showing the underlying mathematics behind them.

He explained that some were very easy to construct while others were difficult, but the most important thing that was learnt is that in design, beauty is often co-ordinated by carefully planned-out adjustments and timeless principles. The more important and beautiful the logo, the less random every pixel is being pushed.

He explains that he acknowledges that some of the following logo grid representations may be stretched-out to fit some mathematical or Golden Ratio calculation. However, you need to understand that even designing with perfect circles or ratios, optical adjustments that go beyond the grid will always be a necessity.

He explains that he may have simply tried to create the grids to fit his own narrative. If you would like to learn more about what logos are and their history, check out What is a logo design?
